Wake Forest on Thursday continued its preparations for Saturday's Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte. The Deacons spent several hours at Lowe's Motor Speedway and went through their final practice session at Charlotte Country Day School.
In the morning, the Deacons visited Lowe's Motor Speedway where each player and coach took three laps around the track as part of the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Outfitted in full racing and safety gear, every Deacon had the chance to ride along in a 600-hp NASCAR-style stock car with 4 speed manual transmission that hit speeds of about 160 miles per hour. After the ride-along, the players were treated to lunch in the pit garages and then participated in a tire-changing competition with the Connecticut Huskies.
"I definitely have a greater understanding of what those drivers go through," said Deacon quarterback Riley Skinner. "It was an awesome experience."
Head coach Jim Grobe then put the Deacs through their final practice session of week in the afternoon at Charlotte Country Day School.
"I thought we had two good days of practice," said Grobe. "Wednesday was wet and cold but I thought we did some good work. (Thursday's) practice was very productive."
About 200 Wake Forest fans attended Thursday's practice session.
The Deacons put the final touches on Saturday's game plan while also concentrating on special teams work.
On Friday, Grobe and players will meet with the media in the morning before the entire squad will attend the kickoff luncheon. An afternoon walk through is scheduled for Bank of America Stadium before a pep rally and street fest in the evening.
Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Bank of America Stadium.
