Wake Forest senior tight end Zac Selmon is one 11 finalists for the Wuerffel Trophy, a national award that honors the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academic and athletic achievement. The Wuerffel Trophy is awarded by the All Sports Association, Inc. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
A religion major, Selmon is the co-founder of the Shine Foundation, a non-profit relief organization that has been actively involved in a number of projects in Liberia. Selmon, the president of the foundation, along with several teammates and other Shine Foundation members, have made numerous trips to Liberia. The organization has built an orphanage in Gbarnga, started an adult literacy program and is assisting in building a school in Kalinglinga, Zambia. The foundation also implemented a program for street kids in Monrovia, Liberia where the kids were matched with solid local families in an effort to allow them to have a sense of belonging and to have real meals and companionship.
Recently, the Shine Foundation enlisted a film crew to visit the Rainbow Town orphanage to film a documentary on the inspirational life of Feeta Naimen, the woman who single-handedly cared for more than 80 children at the orphanage during the Liberian Civil War. The film is expected to be completed next year.
Under Selmon's direction, the Shine Foundation has raised over $200,000.
