WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team added another notch to its consecutive win streak Wednesday night with a 64-46 victory over Wright State at the Joel Coliseum. The game marks the sixth consecutive win for the Demon Deacons, setting the squad with the longest current win streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Deacons (8-1) held Wright State (2-6) shooters to just 28 percent from the floor. In the second half, the Wake Forest defense brought the Raider offensive charge to a grinding halt, preventing WSU from landing a field goal for the first ten minutes of play.
Junior Corinne Groves led the Deacons with 12 points, followed by Courteney Morris, Tiffany Roulhac and Mekia Valentine who put up nine points in the Deacon win. Shelylani Peddy was the leading scorer for the Raiders, with 12 points overall.
Wake Forest never surrendered the lead after the opening minutes during Wednesday night's contest, but the game remained close throughout the first half. Back-to-back Demon Deacon 3-point buckets from Tiffany Roulhac and Christen Brown set Wake with 14-5 advantage in the first five minutes, but the Raiders countered with a 7-0 run to come within two points at the 12:09 mark.
With 4:20 to play in the opening half, WSU's Kanisha Ward followed up a 3-point basket by picking Alex Tchangoue's pocket. The Raider guard sent the ball to Sierra Crayton who nailed the layup to put the Wright State within one point of the Deacs (22-21).
The Raiders were unable to land a field goal in the second half until the 9:43 mark, allowing Wake to build a 45-29 lead. Wright State chipped away at the Demon Deacon advantage but shot just 4-20 from the floor while Wake registered 53 percent in the half, connecting on 15 of 28 attempts.
Freshman Brittany Waters ended the game with a steal and a bucket on the fast break to set Wake Forest with 64 points with 13 seconds in regulation.
Wake Forest will hit the highway this Saturday to face Western Carolina (5-1) in Cullowhee at 4 p.m. The contest will be the last Demon Deacon road game of the 2007 calendar year.
