Grobe, Packer To Represent Wake Forest In Golf Event

Greensboro, Ga. - Jim Grobe and Billy Packer will trade their whistles and microphones for drivers and putters next week. Grobe, Wake Forest's head football coach and Packer, Wake Forest graduate and college basketball analyst, will represent the Demon Deacons at the Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga.
The pairings, announced Wednesday, including NCAA head coaches and celebrities that will compete in this one-of-a-kind golf event May 1 on The Oconee Course at Reynolds Plantation. The round will feature 12 teams of head coaches from around the country paired with a celebrity alumnus from the same school competing for $275,000 in scholarship money.
Teams expected to participate in the inaugural Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater including Frank Beamer/Dell Curry (Virginia Tech), Matt Doherty /Eric Dickerson (SMU), Ralph Friedgen/Scott Van Pelt (Maryland), Chan Gailey/Jon Barry (Georgia Tech), Jim Grobe/Billy Packer (Wake Forest), Chuck Long/Marshall Faulk (San Diego State), Tom Penders/Clyde Drexler (Houston), Mark Richt/Herschel Walker (Georgia), Nick Saban/Cornelius Bennett (Alabama), Steve Spurrier/Darius Rucker (South Carolina), Ted Tollner/Marcus Allen (Southern Cal) and Tommy Tuberville/Pat Sullivan (Auburn).
The event is free and open to the public. Spectators are encouraged to come out and root on their school or favorite coaches and celebrities and enjoy a great day on the golf course. The Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater competitive round begins at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 1. The Oconee Course opens to the public at 8 a.m.
Fans can park in the Christ our King and Savior Church parking lot (across from Publix) at the corner of Lake Oconee Parkway and Linger Longer Road and ride a free shuttle to the course entrance. Take I-20 east to exit 130 then go right for seven miles to the church parking lot.
"We couldn't be happier with this field of golfers," said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president. "Not only do we have some great coaches, we've got some pretty good golfers in the group and all of them are very competitive. This should make for an incredible and entertaining round."
"The Oconee Course is going to be in tournament condition and we're sure it will test all of these teams," said Bob Mauragas, vice president of golf operations. "Reynolds Plantation and The Oconee Course are the perfect backdrop for this wonderful event."
The Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater will be taped for broadcast and aired nationally by CBS from 2 - 4 p.m. (ET) on Christmas Day.
