
Jon Lowery Joins Men's Soccer Staff

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich has announced the hiring of former Ohio State assistant coach Jon Lowery as a new assistant with the Deacon men's soccer team. Lowery, who will work primarily with the goalkeepers, brings a wealth of experience to Winston-Salem.
"Jon is an ambitious coach who is prepared to invest his energies and abilities into improving the Wake Forest soccer program," Vidovich said. "I'm excited to have Jon join our staff and I'm confident that our players and program will benefit from his experience and efforts."
Lowery spent two years as an assistant in Columbus coaching the goalies and assisting with with all aspects of the program. He was a first-team All-Big Ten goalkeeper for Ohio State in 1997 in Bluem's and was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection that season. He repeated his All-Big Ten honor as a senior in 1998, becoming the first two-time first-team All-Big Ten pick in the history of the program. As a Buckeye, Lowery was a two-time captain and two-time team MVP.
Lowery totaled 158 saves in his Ohio State career and a 1.12 goals-against average, which both rank fourth in the Ohio State career record book. He collected 33 saves as a sophomore in 1996 before totaling 65 saves and 60 saves, respectively, in 1997 and 1998 when he earned his back-to-back first-team All-Big Ten honors. With Lowery in goal full-time in 1997 the Buckeyes posted an 11-7-2 record, then went 8-9-3 in 1998.
A native of Apple Valley, Minn., he led Apple Valley High to a 1992 State title and was the 1994 Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year. Lowery's collegiate career began at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1995. As a freshman, he was a 20-game starter and UW-Green Bay's MVP before transferring to Ohio State.
Lowery spent the majority of his pro career with the Minnesota Thunder, playing three seasons in 1999, 2000 and 2002. In 2001, Lowery started the season with the Carolina Dynamo before being called up by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer.
Lowery is a USSF `A' licensed coach. Additionally he has an Advanced National Coaching diploma from the NSCAA and received a master's degree in sport management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2005. He is actively involved with the Columbus Crew Junior's Soccer club and has served as a staff coach for Ohio South ODP.
