TORONTO, Canada - Wake Forest men's soccer standout Julian Valentin will likely start in the World Cup Round of 16 against Uruguay Wednesday night for the U-20 Men's National Team.
The U.S. U-20 squad enters the Uruguay contest riding high after a dramatic 2-1 win over Brazil, marking the first time in four attempts the U.S. team has earned a victory against the South American powerhouse.
The winner of Wednesday's Round of 16 contest will face the winner of Austria/Gambia on July 14.
Valentin is one of three NCAA athletes with a regular starting slot on the U.S. U-20 team. UCLA's Sal Zizzo and Tony Baltran also join Valentin on field at kickoff.
During the Demon Deacons' spectacular 2006 season that ended in the College Cup semifinals, defender Valentin played in all 25 contests, providing crucial support in the Deac defense. The Lancaster, Pa. Native was recognized nationally for his season performance, earning a spot on the NSCAA All-America Second Team, All-South Region First Team and the All-ACC First Team.
