SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Webb Simpson won the 101st Southern Amateur Championship in Pinehurst on Saturday with as he shot a 4-under 68 to win by one-stroke on the final hole.
The Wake Forest junior made a 6-foot par putt on the last hole to avoid a playoff with Southern Cal's Tom Glissmeyer and Seung Su Han of South Korea.
Simpson won with a par on the par-5 18th. His drive found a bunker, and he sent a pitching wedge 5 yards over the green. He chipped out of the rough to within 6 feet then made a par putt.
Simpson, who won the Southern Am two years ago in Myrtle Beach, has a spot in the 2008 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
"It was a tough day," Simpson said. "It was nice to have my dad on the bag to calm me down every now and then."
