WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - - Wake Forest head football coach Jim Grobe put the Deacons through their first two-a-day practice of the preseason on Monday at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex.
The Deacons practiced at 9:30 a.m. and again at 4:00 p.m. It marked the first time that Wake Forest had practiced during the day this year. Each of the first week's practices were night practices.
"We had two good practices today," said Grobe. "It's hot. The practices weren't quite as spirited as we'd like, but we got as much out of these practices as we could. This morning, we had some good competition in pads. This evening, by design, was meant to have a little less intensity. But all in all, it was a good day of practice."
While Grobe refused to single out any particular player or group of players as making the greatest impact thus far, he did cite a group that he anticipates will play a key role in the 2007 Deacon football team.
"The key to our football team is not the 10 or 12 guys that everybody knows about, but the 10 or 12 guys that nobody knows a whole lot about," said Grobe. "And if they play as well as we think they might, that will make all the difference in our season. They're guys who might not necessarily be starters, but if they could give us 15 or 20 really good snaps in the football game, that would be really good."
The Deacons will practice once on Tuesday with a scheduled 3:15 practice. The squad will hold its annual Media Day event Tuesday morning at Groves Stadium before returning to campus for the afternoon practice.
