SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 19th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team will open the regular season this weekend at the San Diego Tournament. The Deacs will face the University of San Diego on Friday night at 8 p.m. PST (11 p.m. EST) and wrap up the tourney with Pepperdine at 11 a.m. PST (2 p.m. EST) on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons finished the 2006 season with a 16-6-1 mark and their 11th consecutive berth to the NCAA tournament. In pre-season play WFU shutout Ohio State 3-0 in Columbus on August 21.
The squad graduated seven seniors in May, but Head Coach Tony da Luz is excited about the make up of the 2007 team.
"The team dynamics this season are incredible," da Luz said. "Everyone is really working hard to make this team the best it can be. It's one of the most motivated groups I've ever worked with."
Senior Christina Hanely earned ACC First-Team honors last year for her work in the midfield and will provide veteran leadership for the team this season, along with senior defender Megan Upchurch.
The USD Toreros finished 2006 with a 12-8-0 mark, just missing an invitation to the NCAA tournament. The Toreros return 18 athletes and eight starters for 2007.
In 2006, the Pepperdine Waves posted 11-6-3 record and a third-place finish in the WCC at 4-2-1. The squad opened the 2007 schedule with a 1-0 scrimmage victory over Cal State-Bakersfield on August 25.
