WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest continues to concentrate on fundamentals as the Deacons completed their second practice session of the preseason on Tuesday evening. The 8 o'clock evening practice was again a respite from the high temperatures that engulfed the Triad region on Tuesday.
"We've got guys that like to practice," said head coach Jim Grobe. "They're enjoying themselves out there and we don't have to say much to them."
The Deacons worked on the fundamental aspects of both offense and defense as well as special teams play in the 2 hour and 10 minute practice session.
"Next week we'll be doing more pad work and more team-oriented drills," said Grobe.
With 47 lettermen returning from last year's 11-3 Atlantic Coast Conference championship team, Grobe and his staff have a veteran club to put on the field in 2007.
"We've been impressed with the retention of the players from the spring," said Grobe. "Our older guys have a good grasp of what we're doing on offense and defense. We've seen a few mistakes but not many.
"And it's fun to watch the young guys. They're making mistakes but they do it at full speed."
Wake Forest will don shoulder pads to go along with helmets for Wednesday's practice. The Deacons will practice in shells again on Thursday before putting on full pads for Friday's practice.
All practice sessions this week are scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the practice fields on campus.
