WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After opening the season with a 2-0-0 start and taking the Nike Carolina Classic title, the Demon Deacons were named No. 1 in the country by NSCAA and Soccer America.
The Deacons (2-0-0) kicked-off the 2007 schedule with then-No. 21 Old Dominion last Friday, taking a 2-1 overtime victory. The squad completed play in the season opening tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina, with a 2-0 shutout over Monmouth on Sunday.
Four WFU athletes were named to the Carolina Classic All-Tournament team, including senior defender Pat Phelan, junior midfielder Evan Brown, sophomore forward Cody Arnoux and freshman Corben Bone.
This weekend the Deacons will host the Wake Forest University Tournament, opening with the No. 16 Akron Zips on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Zips (2-0-0) hit the ground running last weekend, upsetting then-No. 10 New Mexico 3-1 to start the 2007 season.
