WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman forward James Johnson was named the ACC Rookie of the Week after averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in the Demon Deacons' two games last week.
Johnson scored a season-high 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Deacons to a 74-57 win against Florida State on Sunday. Johnson went 10-for-15 from the floor, including a 4-for-5 mark from three-point range. He also added three steals and a block.
Johnson scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half against the Seminoles, leading the Deacs back from a halftime deficit. His second-half point total was almost as much as FSU's team total (26) for the half.
Johnson had 14 points and nine rebounds in Wake Forest's 71-64 loss at Maryland on Tuesday. He set a new season-high with four blocked shots against the Terps.
On the week, Johnson shot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the floor and had five blocks and four steals.
On the season, Johnson is the team's leader with 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He ranks third in the ACC in rebounding and 10th in scoring. He is also among the league's top 10 in offensive rebounds (2nd), field goal percentage (6th), blocked shots (8th) and defensive rebounds (9th).
Johnson is the second Deacon to earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors this year. Guard Jeff Teague received the award on Dec. 17. Wake Forest is the only team to have two different players earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors this season. In program history, 33 Deacons have received the honor a total of 55 times.
Wake Forest is currently 12-5 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. The Deacons will play at No. 25 Clemson on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
