A former Wake Forest player and a former assistant coach will carry their Demon Deacon ties into Super Bowl XLII on Feb. 3, 2008 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ.
Giants' defensive tackle Fred Robbins played at Wake Forest from 1996-99. He started at defensive tackle for the Giants on Sunday and recorded two tackles in the 23-20 overtime win over the Green Bay Packers.
Giants offensive line coach Pat Flaherty spent six seasons at Wake Forest from 1993-98, coaching the offensive line, tight ends and special teams. He is in his fourth season coaching the Giants' offensive line.
Robbins was three-year starter at defensive tackle and a second team All-ACC pick in 1999. He played in the Senior Bowl after collecting 15 sacks and 44 career tackles for loss.
Robbins was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the 2000 NFL draft. After four years with the Vikings, he signed with the Giants as an unrestricted free agent in 2004.
Robbins will be the 14th Deacon to have appeared in the Super Bowl. Last year, Wake Forest was represented by Chicago Bears tight end Desmond Clark and Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Ricky Proehl.
