Wake Forest Turns Back RedHawks 81-59

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Alex Tchangoue contributed a career-high 22 points in Wake Forest's 81-59 win over Miami University of Ohio on Saturday afternoon. The Demon Deacons are now 5-0 on the season and the RedHawks move to 2-2.
Tchangoue was the leading scorer in the game while Jenna Schone led the RedHawks with 20 points. Wake Forest's Secily Ray and Miami's Erin Wisner shared the high rebound mark with seven caroms each.
The Deacons clung to an early lead, stretching the advantage to seven points with 11:39 to play.
With 5:40 to play in the first half, Miami point guard Jenna Schone picked up a botched Wake Forest pass and made a run for the at the top of the Demon Deacon key. Schone netted a 3-point basket to give Miami its first lead of the game, 23-22.
In the next Miami possession Brooke Thomas forced a turnover from Schone and set up Tchangoue for a jumper that put Wake Forest back in front 24-23 with 4:29 to play.
With 1:18 before halftime, Alex Tchangoue hit a 3-pointer that sent the Deacons back in front by two possessions, 32-26. Maggie Boyer added a couple of free throws to bring Miami within four points of Wake Forest heading into intermission.
Demon Deacons Brittany Waters and Corinne Groves both picked up two fouls early and were benched during the final minutes of the first half. Waters, the team's leading rebounder and scorer, picked up her third foul in the first minute of the second half and was immediately replaced by Secily Ray.
Early in the second half the Schone hit her second of four 3-point baskets to give Miami a 38-36 lead with just over 17 minutes to play. Two free throws from Groves tied the score for the second and final time. The Deacons would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the contest.
Back-to-back fast break baskets put Wake Forest up 62-48 with 8:40 to play. A layup from Miami's Wisner ended a 12-0 run by the Deacons with just over eight minutes on the clock.
With 2:24 to play in regulation, Tchangoue netted two free throws to set a new career high of 22 points. Tchangoue topped her previous mark of 20, last achieved in January of 2007 vs. Maryland. Tchangoue then sat out the final minutes of the game and junior Jessie Cain filled in at the wing.
Next up for the Deacons is South Carolina on December 3, with a special 11 a.m. tip-off at the Joel Coliseum.
