Fountain, Smerdzinski Named to All-ACC Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest junior defender Kaley Fountain and senior midfielder Amy Smerdzinski were named to the 2008 All-ACC Second Team, as announced on Tuesday morning by the conference office.
The honor marks the second straight season that Fountain and Smerdzinski have earned All-ACC honors. Fountain was a first team All-ACC selection in 2007, while Smerdzinski earned second team honors last year
Fountain, a defender from Austin, Texas, has seen time in 16 games this season, including 14 starts. Fountain has scored two goals on the season and added four assists. She has also been a critical part of the Deacon back line, contributing to nine shutouts on the season.
A native of Chantilly, Va., Smerdzinski has started every game this season. Smerdzinski has five goals on the season and two assists. Smerdzinski scored two goals in the final week of conference play, scoring the equalizing goal against Virginia Tech and tallying the game-winning goal in Wake Forest's victory at No. 8 Virginia.
Casey Noguiera of North Carolina was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Virginia's Nikki Krzysik was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Tiffany McCarty of Florida State was the Freshman of the Year and North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrrance was the Coach of the Year.
North Carolina led all conference schools with eight players on the All-ACC and All-Freshman teams, while Florida State was second with seven players represented.
No. 19 Wake Forest returns to the pitch on Wednesday, facing eighth-ranked Virginia in the quarterfinals of the 2008 ACC Tournament.
