Wake Forest cornerback Alphonso Smith on Saturday (Dec. 13) was named to the Football Writers Association of America All-America team.
Smith was previously named a first team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and the Walter Camp Foundation. He was also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award.
He was the only Atlantic Coast Conference player chosen to this year's FWAA team.
Smith, a 5-9, 190-pound senior from Pahokee, Fla. (Pahokee), led Wake Forest with six interceptions on the season and tied the ACC record with 20 for his career. He finished the year with 36 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a blocked punt. Smith is currently second in the nation with 19 passes defended including 13 pass breakups and six interceptions. He set the school record with 60 career passes defended.
Smith is just the sixth Wake Forest player ever named to the FWAA team and the first since punter Ryan Plackemeier in 2005. Other Wake Forest players on the FWAA team have included Paul Kiser (1986), Bill Armstrong (1976), Chuck Ramsey (1973) and Bill Barnes (1956).
For 65 years, the FWAA has selected an All-America team with the help of its members and an All-America Committee which represents all the regions in the country. The FWAA also selects the Outland Trophy winner (best interior lineman) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner (best defensive player).
The Deacons will play Navy in the inaugural EagleBank Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 20 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
