Billings Named Defensive Back Coach of the Year

Wake Forest secondary coach Tim Billings has been named the 2008 FootballScoop Defensive Backs Coach of the Year powered by Muscle Milk®.
With outstanding play in the secondary, the Demon Deacons were able to finish 8-5 including a 29-19 win over Navy in the inaugural EagleBank Bowl. Billings did a terrific job in his first year back on "the dark side" after spending the previous two seasons coaching Wake's wide receivers. Wake Forest finished 2nd nationally in turnovers gained (35) and 17th nationally in scoring defense.
FootballScoop spoke with Head Coach Jim Grobe, "Tim is a great person and a great coach. He's done everything we've asked. He's a real professional."
Billings, himself a former defensive back, is proud of the way the defensive backs accepted his approach telling FootballScoop, "This was an experienced group. We made some changes. The guys bought into the system and they had a great season.."
Cornerback Alphonso Smith has been recognized as an All-American and was a unanimous choice for first team All-ACC. Smith's overtime interception vs. Duke sealed the 33-30 win over the Blue Devils.
Billings was nominated by his peers and was selected by a panel of former coaches and players. Other finalists for the 2008 FootballScoop Defensive Backs Coach of the Year powered by Muscle Milk® were Jamie Bryant (Vanderbilt) and Larry Slade (Tennessee).
He will receive his award at the AFCA Convention in January and will receive a complimentary supply of various Muscle Milk® and CytoSport products.
