ATHENS, Ga. - - The Wake Forest women's soccer team played two exhibition matches over the weekend, finishing with a 2-0 win over host school Georgia, and a 1-1 draw with Tennessee.
Wake Forest 2, Georgia 0
In the first game of the Saturday's competition, the Bulldogs fell to Wake Forest, 2-0.
The Demon Deacons took the lead in the 16th-minute as Allie Sadow got behind Georgia's restraining line to receive the long ball played by Christina Hanley. Sadow got on the end of the pass and slotted it past the sliding Georgia goalkeeper from about 15 yards out.
In the second half, Wake extended its lead to 2-0 on a laser strike from Sarah Winslow. Maggie Horne received the ball on the left side, played it back to the middle across the top of Georgia's penalty box and found Winslow, who blasted it into the upper left corner.
Wake Forest put seven shots on goal to just one from the Bulldogs. Georgia goalkeepers combined to make five saves, while Demon Deacon netminder Laura Morse saved the Dogs' only attempt on frame. UGA led in corner kicks, 6-3, and committed 10 fouls to Wake's five.
Wake Forest 1, Tennessee 1
In the midday game, Wake Forest took on Tennessee at the UGA Soccer Stadium. Battling intermittent rain and wind, the Demon Deacons and Lady Vols played to a 1-1 draw.
After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest got on the board first just over six minutes into the second stanza. Winslow gathered the ball and took it to the UT endline on the right side, then slotted a perfect cross to a cutting Victoria Delbono, who one-timed it into the back of the net from six yards out.
Tennessee then tied the contest at one apiece in the 51st minute of play as Rossi buried an unassisted left-footed shot past the diving save attempt of Wake goalkeeper Amanda Barasha. Barasha had denied Rossi early in the first half with a terrific diving save as Rossi had broken away from the Demon Deacon defense and tried to go to the keeper's right, but Barasha quickly got airborne and parried the ball out of bounds.
Wake Forest put seven shots on goal to the Lady Vols' five. Johnson and Baird combined to make six saves for UT while Barasha made all four of Wake's stops. UT took three corners to WF's two, and also committed seven fouls to Wake's five.
