WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Spring football practice is winding down at Wake Forest as head coach Jim Grobe and his staff prepare for Saturday's spring game. The final scrimmage will be held at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex on the Wake Forest University campus.
Much like Saturday's scrimmage where most of the veterans came out after the first couple of series, the final week of practice is focused on providing experience for those players who have seen limited game action.
"It's a broken record but we're trying to get as many reps as possible for younger players," said Grobe. "A lot of those young players have never been in a (college) football game. Those guys that we redshirted last year, the only experience we can give them is on the practice field so we're trying to get them as many reps as possible."
With most of the new players continuing to learn the system, practice hasn't always been pretty.
"It looks like a bunch of hodge-podge out there," said Grobe. "We're still adding stuff, adding some wrinkles here and there. We're not worried about playing anybody at the end of the week, so we're experimenting with some things both offensively and defensively."
Grobe spent much of his day on Tuesday talking with the media, conducting interviews with several newspapers and appearing on a pair of sports talk shows.
The Deacons will practice Wednesday in helmets and then don full pads again on Thursday.
Saturday's spring scrimmage is scheduled to start at 1 o'clock p.m.
