Wake Forest Hands Out Team Awards at Annual Banquet

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest handed out several team awards, including the inaugural Skip Prosser Award, on Tuesday evening at the annual Wake Forest Basketball Banquet at the Old Town Club.

Cameron Stanley received the Murray Greason Award, which goes annually to the player who has accomplished outstanding athletic achievement and most impacted his teammates through hard work, determination and season-long effort.

Bobby Hoekstra received the Skip Prosser Award. The award was created by the coaching staff this season to honor the late Prosser. The award goes to the player who best represents the values and virtues displayed by Coach Prosser, including integrity, character, trustworthiness and an emphasis on academics.

Sophomore Chas McFarland was named the team's Most Improved Player. McFarland led all ACC players in per game scoring improvement from last season. McFarland averaged 7.9 more points per game than he did in 2006-07. He also finished second among ACC players in per game minutes increase from last season, seeing 16.1 more minutes per game in 2007-08.

Ishmael Smith was named the Team Assists Leader. Smith, a sophomore point guard, has earned the honor each of the past two seasons. Smith dished out 141 assists on the year, an average of 4.70 per game.

James Johnson received the Best Rebounder Award. Johnson pulled down a total of 244 rebounds, an average of 8.1 per game. He was the first freshman to lead the Deacons in rebounding since Niki Arinze did it in 1998. Johnson's per game average was the 13th highest ever by a freshman in ACC history.

Harvey Hale received the team's Best Free Throw Shooter Award. Hale shot 84.3 percent from the foul line this season, the best mark on the team. Hale made 43 of his 51 attempts. For his career, Hale has shot 80.0 percent (152-for-190) at the line.

David Weaver received the Best Defensive Player Award. Weaver, a redshirt sophomore center, finished the season with 23 blocks. After implementing a new team defensive system this season, Weaver and the Deacons finished in the top half of the ACC in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, steals and blocked shots.

Wake Forest finished the season 17-13 overall and 7-9 in the ACC.
