Wake Forest defensive end Jeremy Thompson became the first Demon Deacon chosen in the 2008 NFL Draft when he was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the third pick in the fourth round on Sunday.
Thompson, a 6-5, 264-pounder from Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Christian) led Wake Forest with 6.5 sacks in 2007. He was an Academic All-District III selection, was chosen to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society and was a finalist for the National Sportsmanship Award. Thompson finished the season with 45 tackles and 11 tackles for loss. For his career, Thompson recorded 111 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. He played in the Senior Bowl following the 2007 season.
Thompson's selection marks the fourth straight year that Wake Forest has had a player selected in the draft. He is the first Deacon defensive end chosen since Calvin Pace went in the first round of the 2003 draft to the Arizona Cardinals.
Thompson also marks the first Deacon selected by the Packers since guard Gregg Harris was a fifth round pick in 1987.
Wake Forest has now had 137 players selected in the NFL Draft since Lou Trunzo was a 15th round pick by Brooklyn in 1939.
