- WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - When the Wake Forest men's soccer team hits the field for the first time in 2008, it will do so with a special purpose. The defending national champions will honor the wife of former trainer Stephen Wiley in the Genna Wiley Memorial Match, scheduled for August 19 at 7 p.m. against Wofford at Spry Stadium. After a long battle with breast cancer, Genna passed away three days after Wake Forest won the national championship last season.
"Wake Forest soccer prides itself on being a family," Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich said. "Steve (Wiley) and his family were great parts of our program. To live through Genna's fight with breast cancer with them and the sadness of losing Genna, it's a tremendous honor to do a very little thing to recognize how much their family means to us."
Each fan will need a ticket to enter the game, and tickets will be free of charge. However, fans will have the opportunity to make a donation in the amount of their choosing when they enter the game. All proceeds from the game will go to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
In conjunction with the game, the Wake Forest players will be wearing pink Nike jerseys, a color symbolic of the fight against breast cancer. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on these special game-worn jerseys during a silent auction that will be held during the game. Other items, such as 2009 soccer camp sessions, will also be auctioned off. Fans attending the game are also encouraged to wear pink to support the fight against breast cancer.
The Wofford game will be the first exhibition match of the season for the Deacs. Wake Forest also faces Furman in an exhibition match on August 23, before opening the regular season on August 29, against Florida International.
