WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Sarah Winslow scored three goals and senior Amanda Lebo tallied two goals and two assists to lead the 21st-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team to a 6-1 win over Appalachian State in the exhibition opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.
"It was a great start for us," head coach Tony da Luz said. "The first 20 minutes were really impressive. You could see the stuff that we were working on in the preseason developing on the field. I thought we hit a little bit of fatigue at the end of the first half. A new group in the second half put it back together and we finished the game strong."
The Deacons dominated the game from start to finish. Wake Forest outshot Appalachian State 27-8 and the Deacs had 13 shots on goal compared to four for the Mountaineers. Sophomore Amanda Barasha got the start in goal for Wake Forest, allowing one goal and making three saves. Caroline Clark allowed five goals in just over 80 minutes for Appalachian State and Emma White played the final 9:43, giving up one goal.
After scoring three goals all of last season, Winslow was impressive in the exhibition opener, scoring three times. Lebo scored twice and also contributed an assist on two of the Deacon goals.
"Sarah's been scoring goals since the spring," da Luz added. "She was our leading scorer in the spring. She can do a lot of things. She can hit the ball with power and head the ball. She's a matchup problem for our opponents. What a great start for her. I'm really happy for her."
Wake Forest started the scoring just two minutes and 14 seconds into the game. Allie Sadow took a ball on the right side of the box, eight yards out and beat the ASU keeper on the left side. Lebo recorded her first assist of the game on the goal.
Lebo would get in the scoring column at the 15:05 mark to put the Deacons up 2-0. Lebo scored from 12 yards out in front of the net. Kaley Fountain and Jill Hutchinson notched assists on the play.
Appalachian State got on the board in the 41st minute as Caroline Lowe crossed the ball from the right side of the field and it was headed in by Jennifer MacNeill.
Wake Forest answered the ASU goal just under two minutes later as Winslow scored her first goal of the game and Lebo added her second assist. Winslow headed the ball in the net from eight yards out to give the Deacs a 3-1 lead at the half.
Winslow extended Wake Forest's lead to 4-1 at the 72:15 mark of the second half. The Wilson, N.C., native received a cross from Chelsea Allen 15 yards out and was able to beat the goalkeeper on the left side.
Lebo recorded her second goal of the game in the 78th minute. Penn State transfer Bianca D'Agostino crossed the ball from the left side of the field and hit Lebo who found the back of the night from eight yards out.
Wake Forest scored its final goal of the game in the 89th minute as Sarah Winslow completed her hat trick with a laser shot from 22 yards out that went inside the left post.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Tuesday as they will host Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. in their final exhibition game of the season. For more information on Wake Forest soccer, visit www.wakeforestsports.com.
