WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest begins its 107th season of intercollegiate football on Thursday, Aug. 28, when the No. 23-ranked Demon Deacons visit the Baylor Bears in Waco, Texas. The game, scheduled to kickoff at 8 p.m. ET, will be nationally-televised on Fox Sports Net and can also be heard on the Wake Forest ISP Radio Network.
The Deacons enter the season ranked No. 23 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls, which marks the first time in school history that Wake Forest has entered the season ranked in one of the two major polls.
Wake Forest also finds itself in the midst of its greatest period of football success in program history. Wake is one of just 18 schools in the country with 20 wins over the last two seasons. Among ACC foes, only Boston College and Virginia Tech can boast the same.
The Deacs will be looking for their first win over the Bears, having dropped all four previous meetings. Wake will also seek its first win in the state of Texas and its first win against a Texas-based opponent.
Quickie Notes
- The Deacons are 48-55-3 all-time in season openers. Under Jim Grobe, Wake is 3-4 in season openers. - If Wake Forest finishes the 2008 campaign over .500, it would mark the first time since 1950-52 that the Deacons have posted three straight winning records. - Wake Forest enters the 2008 season with 398 wins in program history. - Wake Forest has never won a football game in Texas, going 0-11 in the Lone Star state. The Baylor game marks Wake's first visit to Texas since playing at Rice in 1990 (L, 33-17).
