Sept. 1, 2008
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest is set to host SEC foe Ole Miss on Saturday, Sept. 6, in the Demon Deacons' 2008 home opener. The game, set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. on ABC, will be the first for Wake's new Deacon Tower. Constructed in less than 18 months, Deacon Tower stands as one of the finest press facilities in all of college athletics.
On the field, the Deacons and Rebels will meet for just the second time ever. Ole Miss will be out for revenge after Wake Forest hung a 27-3 defeat on the Rebels during the 2006 season in Oxford.
Both teams come in to this year's matchup following season-opening wins. The Deacs downed the Baylor Bears, 41-13, on Aug. 28 in Waco, Texas, while the Rebels defeated Memphis, 41-24, last Saturday at home. Ole Miss will be the first of two SEC opponents Wake will host in 2008 (Vanderbilt on Nov. 29).
Wake Forest will put its five-game home winning streak on the line this weekend. The Deacons dropped their home opener in 2007 to Nebraska, 20-17, and then won five straight. Wake has won nine of its last 12 at home and 11 of its last 15.
Quickie Notes
- Wake Forest is 67-37-2 in 106 previous home openers. The Deacons have won nine of their last 12 home openers at BB&T Field, including five of their past seven under Jim Grobe.
- If Wake Forest finishes the 2008 campaign over .500, it would mark the first time since 1950-52 that the Deacons have posted three straight winning seasons.
- Wake Forest will be gunning for its 400th career win. The Deacs come in to this weekend's game with an all-time mark of 399-581-33 (.410).
Next Up...
Wake Forest will be off next weekend before travelling to Tallahassee, Fla., to face ACC Atlantic Division rival Florida State on Sept. 20. The Deacons will return home the following weekend to host the U.S. Naval Academy on Sept. 20. The kickoff times for the FSU and Navy games have not been set.
