WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 12th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team faces Charlotte and No. 22 Cal State Fullerton this weekend as the Deacons host the Wake Forest Nike Tournament. Fellow ACC team Virginia Tech is the fourth team competing in this weekend's tournament.
"We have three quality teams playing in the tournament this weekend," head coach Tony da Luz said. "Charlotte has won their conference twice and Fullerton won their conference championship last year and has traditionally been a very good team in southern California."
Wake Forest is coming off its first loss of the season, a 2-1 decision against No. 11 Texas A&M. Junior forward Jill Hutchinson scored the lone goal of the game for the Deacs, tallying in the 87th minute. Hutchinson has scored one goal in every game this season to lead the team with five goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Barasha suffered her first loss of the season against the Aggies. Barasha made a career-high six saves against Texas A&M.
Charlotte enters the weekend with a 3-1-1 record. The 49ers have picked up victories over UNC-Wilmington, Tennessee Tech and Pittsburgh. Their lone loss on the season came against North Carolina. The 49ers are led by Whitney Weinraub, who has five goals and 11 points on the season. Weinraub was recently named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the second straight week and was named to Soccer Buzz's National Elite Team of the Week.
"Charlotte is a very strong opponent in our region," da Luz said. "We're expecting a very good game from them. They have a lot of athleticism and different types of weapons. We have to be totally ready for Friday."
The Deacons and 49ers have met nine times previously. Wake Forest has controlled the season, currently owning an 8-0-1 advantage. The two teams last met on October 7, 2003, with the Deacons claiming a 4-1 victory.
Cal State Fullerton is ranked in all four of the major national women's soccer polls, including being ranked as high as No. 22 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Titans are 4-1-0 to start the season, picking up victories over Pepperdine, California, St. Mary's and Alabama. Fullerton is led by sophomore Tamara Dewey, who leads the team with a pair of goals and five points.
"Fullerton has had a couple of great wins this season," da Luz added. "They are a very tough team physically. They're good on set plays. We're going to have to be at the top of our game for both contests this weekend."
Sunday's match will mark the first meeting between Wake Forest and Cal State Fullerton.
The Wake Forest Nike Tournament gets under way at 5 p.m. (ET) on Friday as Cal State Fullerton will meet Virginia Tech. Wake Forest and Charlotte will square off at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
