Team Records and Series Notes:
- Wake Forest falls to 16-1 overall and 3-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Virginia Tech improves to 13-5 and 3-1 in league play.
- Wake Forest moves to 26-25 all-time against Virginia Tech.
- The Demon Deacons entered the game as the only unbeaten team in the nation and in possession of their best start in school history. The best start previously had been a 15-0 record to begin the 1926-27 campaign.
- Head coach Dino Gaudio moves to 34-14 in his second year at the helm of the Deacs. Gaudio is 102-138 in his eighth season overall as a head coach.
- Wake Forest will have the upcoming weekend off before hosting No. 2-ranked Duke on Jan. 28 on ESPN at 7 p.m. The Deacons will then hit the road for games at Georgia Tech (Jan. 31) and at Miami (Feb. 4).
Wake Forest Team Notes:
- Key Runs: Wake Forest went on a 14-4 run early in the second half, bringing the Virginia Tech lead to five, 47-42, with 13:32 remaining. Virginia Tech went on later to score eight unanswered points, increasing the Hokie lead to 10 with 6:12 left in the game. The Deacons climbed back to within two with 3:28 remaining but were unable to close the gap.
- Key Stat: The Hokies shot 50 percent from the field (25-of-50) compared to the Deacons' 43.1 percent (28-of-65). Virginia Tech converted on 25 points off of 16 Wake Forest turnovers, compared to Wake Forest's 15 points off of Virginia Tech's 13 turnovers.
- After not attempting any free throws in the first half, the Deacons went 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe in the second period. This tied the season-high free throw percentage for Wake Forest, also converting 83.3 percent (15-of-18) at East Carolina on Dec. 22.
- Wake Forest trailed 24-34 at the half. It was the Deacons' lowest first-half point total since scoring 21 against Winston-Salem State on Nov. 24. The first-half deficit marks Wake's largest deficit going into the break this season. Previously, Wake Forest had trailed at BYU by three at the half, 48-45, on Jan. 3.
- The Deacons failed to convert on any three-pointers in the first half (0-of-3), while holding the Hokies to 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from three-point range.
- Wake Forest has now made a three pointer in 537 consecutive games.
- The first points made by Wake Forest on a Jeff Teague layup with 18:28 remaining in the first half marked the latest in the game the Deacons have recorded their first points to-date this season.
Wake Forest Individual Notes:
- Sophomore guard Jeff Teague scored 23 points on the night, marking the 21st straight game he has finished in double figures. It was his ninth 20+ point performance of the season and the 15th of his career. Teague has scored at least 20 points in each of his last five games.
- Sophomore forward James Johnson finished with 18 points. It was his 10th game this season in double figures and the fifth time in his last six games. He also was perfect from the free throw line (7-of-7).
- Freshman forward Al-Farouq Aminu scored 10 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.
- Junior guard L.D. Williams scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds on the night.
- Junior Ishmael Smith came off the bench to lead the Deacons with four assists in the matchup.
