Fountain Named Soccer Buzz All-American

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest junior defender Kaley Fountain earned All-America honors for the second straight year as she was named a third-team All-American by Soccer Buzz. Fountain, along with three other Wake Forest players, were named all-southeast region by Soccer Buzz.
After earning fourth-team All-American honors in 2007, Fountain was named a third-team All American and first team all-southeast region after her junior season. Senior midfielder Amy Smerdzinski was named to the all-southeast second team, while junior forward Jill Hutchinson was named to the third team. Freshman Amanda Howell was named a member of the all-southeast freshman team.
A junior defender from Austin, Texas, Fountain played in 17 games and made 15 starts in 2008 for the Demon Deacons. Fountain helped Wake Forest to nine shutouts during the season. She also scored two goals and added four assists. Fountain was also a member of the United States U-20 Women's National Team that won a gold medal in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile in December.
Smerdzinski played and started in all 21 games for the Demon Deacons in 2008. The Chantilly, Va., native scored six goals, two assists and 14 points during her senior season. An All-ACC second team selection, Smerdzinski was recently chosen to join the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team as it travels to Spain for a pair of games in early February.
Hutchinson was a regular in the Wake Forest attack, starting every game of the season. Hutchinson led the Deacs in the three major offensive categories, scoring 10 goals, seven assists and 27 points. The Wayne, Pa., native scored six game-winning goals on the season, including the game winner in Wake's NCAA Tournament victory over Morehead State.
A freshman midfielder from Colleyville, Texas, Howell played in 17 games, with 14 starts, during her freshman season. She closed the year with starts in the final seven games of the season. Howell added two assists on the season, including an assist in Wake's victory over Virginia Tech, which clinched a berth in the ACC Tournament.
