
Deacons Charge Past USF Bulls 62-45

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team jumped in front of 2009 WNIT Champion South Florida 24-0 and kept up momentum through the game to post a 62-45 win on Wednesday night in Winston-Salem.
Junior Brittany Waters led Wake Forest with 21 points and freshman Sandra Garcia posted a team-high 10 rebounds. Janae Stokes and Jessica Lawson each put up 13 points for the Bulls and Lawson had the game-high 13 rebounds.
Wake Forest improves to 2-0 with the win and Bulls stall at 1-2.
Waters scored 10 of Wake Forest's 24 points in the team's opening 24-0 run. Waters also became a force for the Demon Deacon defense, recording three blocks and four steals. The Deacons helped keep the Bulls down by preventing any USF offensive rebounds until the 6:16 mark in the first half.
Stokes was the first to break through for USF, landing a 3-pointer at the 8:01 mark. A couple of 3-point baskets from Stokes and Leondra Doomes-Stephens in the final minute of the opening half set the intermission score at 32-16.
Back-to-back USF baskets from Lawson and Keneisha Saunders cut the Wake Forest advantage to 12 at the start of the second half, marking the smallest Demon Deacon lead of the game.
Waters added a layup and a USF foul on Saunders returned the ball to Wake possession. Sandra Garcia added another Wake basket to push the Deacons back in front 36-20 by 16:49.
At 11:02 Courteney Morris picked Saunders' pocket and converted on the fast break to put Wake Forest back in front by 24 points (50-26). Morris finished the game with a solid 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists and four steals.
The Demon Deacons will play their first road contest this Saturday, playing Miami of Ohio in Oxford.
