Basketball Game Notes - Wake Forest vs. Richmond

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest is set to ring in the New Year by hosting longtime rival Richmond on Thursday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem. The game will be televised on ESPNU and is also available on the Wake Forest ISP Sports Radio Network.

The Deacons are 9-2 overall (1-0 ACC) following their 75-60 win at UNC Greensboro on Monday at the Greensboro Coliseum. Wake Forest set a school record with 16 blocks in the game, breaking a mark that had stood since 1975.

Al-Farouq Aminu led the way, finishing with 23 points, 17 rebounds, six blocks and three assists. Aminu is averaging a double-double on the year with 16.7 points and an ACC-best 11.3 rebounds per game.

Ishmael Smith turned in six assists and a career-high four blocks at UNCG, while L.D. Williams fell just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshmen Ari Stewart and C.J. Harris were also in double-figure scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Richmond, who received votes in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, comes in at 10-3 on the season. The Spiders are coming off a 66-64 win over UNC Wilmington on Monday in Richmond. Kevin Anderson paces UR with 17.1 points per game, while David Gonzalvez averages 14.1

Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Richmond, 37-9. The series dates back to the 1920-21 season. The Deacs have won 16 straight in the series since 1990-91, which includes a 9-0 record at the Joel Coliseum.

Deacons Own ACC Rookie of the Week Award
Wake Forest has won the ACC Rookie of the Week award four times this season and 14 total times over the past three campaigns, which is easily a league-high over Virginia's six. Wake Forest is the only ACC school to have multiple Rookie awards each of the past three seasons.

Next Up...
Wake Forest will host Xavier on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in the inaugural Skip Prosser Classic. The game, which will be televised nationally by FSN, begins a 10-year series with the Musketeers. The Deacons will then play at Miami on Saturday, Jan. 9.
