Wake Forest Falls 79-55 at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team fell 79-55 at Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Secily Ray led the Demon Deacons in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and five rebounds. VT's Utahya Drye had the game-high 17 points and Brittany Gordon led all rebounders with 13 caroms.
Wake Forest is now 18-8 and 5-7 in the ACC. Virginia Tech is 12-16, 2-11.
Senior forward Corinne Groves played her first minutes since falling ill before the NC State contest on February 12. She played 22 minutes and added 8 points and 2 rebounds.
Virginia Tech shot a stellar 65 percent from the floor while the Deacons stalled at 33 percent.
Secily Ray was the first to score, netting back-to-back layups to give Wake Forest a 4-0 lead to open the game. The Hokies then pushed forward and held as much as a 13 point advantage in the first half, propelled by a 9-0 run in the final six minutes.
Courteney Morris netted a 3-point basket in the final minute to cut the Virginia Tech advantage to 27-18 but VT center Brittany Gordon netted a jumper with 30 seconds before halftime to retain a double-digit Hokie lead heading into the locker room.
Virginia Tech continued to extend the lead in the second half, leading by as much as 28 points with just under four minutes to play.
Sunday's contest wraps up regular season road action for the Deacons. On Wednesday, February 25, Wake Forest will host No. 7 Duke at 7 p.m. The team will finish the regular season on Sunday, March 1 against Florida State at 3 p.m. The ACC Tournament will be held in Greensboro March 5-8.
