Wake Forest cornerback Alphonso Smith was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft on Saturday by the Denver Broncos. Smith was the fifth player picked in the second round, the 37th player drafted overall.
Smith was the third corner taken in the draft. He is just the second Deacon ever drafted by the Broncos. WR Desmond Clark was taken by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 1999 Draft.
Smith, along with Aaron Curry, who was picked in the first round by the Seattle Seahawks, mark the two highest drafted Deacons ever in a single draft. In 1989 and 1951, Wake Forest had two players each taken in the second round. Wake has never had a first and a second round pick in the same draft.
Smith's selection makes him the 134th Wake Forest player taken in either the NFL or AFL draft.
