WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team traditionally plays one of the toughest schedules in college soccer and the 2009 season will be no different as the 18-game regular season schedule features 10 teams that advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
"The conference schedule is always demanding," head coach Jay Vidovich said. "We also have several difficult non-conference games that will be a good test for our team."
The Demon Deacons open the season with a pair of exhibition games. Wake Forest will host Liberty on August 22 in an exhibition match, before traveling to Furman on August 27 for the team's final tune-up before regular season play.
Wake Forest opens the regular season at home against William & Mary on September 1. The Deacs and Tribe met on the pitch in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament with Wake Forest claiming a dramatic 1-0 victory in overtime. Other non-ACC home games include Elon (September 23), Charlotte (September 29) and Davidson (October 27).
Wake Forest hits the road for the first time on September 4 and 6, traveling to Bloomington, Ind., for the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The Deacs will face Notre Dame on September 4 and Indiana on September 6. Both teams were selected for the NCAA Tournament in 2008.
The Demon Deacons will be tested with several difficult non-conference road games, including contests at UNC Greensboro (October 6), College of Charleston (October 13) and South Carolina (October 20).
"We'll really know where we stand after the first week of the season when we play William & Mary, Notre Dame and Indiana," Vidovich added. "We also have games at College of Charleston, South Carolina and UNC Greensboro, which are always tough places to play."
Atlantic Coast Conference play opens on September 13, when Wake Forest travels to Clemson to take on the Tigers. Other conference road games include Virginia Tech (October 2), NC State (October 17) and Boston College (October 30).
The Deacs face conference-rival Virginia on September 18 in the first home ACC game of the 2009 season. Wake Forest will also host 2008 College Cup participant North Carolina (October 9), 2008 national champion Maryland (October 24) and Duke (November 6) in conference home games during the season.
"As usual, the ACC will be strong from top to bottom," Vidovich said. "It'll be great for our fans to see the last two national champions when Maryland comes to town and North Carolina on homecoming weekend will also be a big game for our team."
The 2009 ACC Tournament will again take place at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The tournament begins on November 10 with the first round game. The quarterfinals are set for November 11, with the semifinals slated for November 13. The finals will take place on November 15.
The first four rounds of the 2009 NCAA Tournament will take place on college campuses throughout the country. The tournament begins on November 20 & 21 with first round games. Second round contests will be played November 24, while the third round will be played November 28 or 29. The quarterfinals will take place December 4, 5 or 6.
The 2009 College Cup will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary on December 11 and 13. Wake Forest claimed its first national title the last time the College Cup was held in Cary in 2007.
Wake Forest returns 20 players, including six starters, from the 2008 team that finished the season with a 21-2-1 record and advanced to the College Cup for the third straight season.
