WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team announced its 2009 schedule, which includes 10 games at Spry Stadium and eight matches against squads that advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
"We have a good mix of out of region opponents an in region opponents with our schedule this year," head coach Tony da Luz said. "We have some tough road trips early in the season to Kentucky and UAB. The schedule will present some really good challenges for our team."
The Deacs open the season with a pair of home matches. Wake Forest faces Campbell in an exhibition match on August 15, before opening up the regular season against High Point on August 21.
Wake Forest will host UNC Wilmington (August 26), Loyola (Md.) (August 30) and East Carolina (September 6) in non-conference matches at Spry Stadium.
The Deacs hit the road for the first time in 2009 on August 23, traveling to UNC Greensboro. Wake Forest will also travel to SEC-foe Kentucky (September 4), Connecticut (September 13) and UAB (September 19). The Deacons will face Penn State on September 11 on a neutral field in Storrs, Conn., as part of the UConn Classic.
"One of the themes this year is to try to challenge the team on the road and put them in difficult situations," da Luz added. "It's helps our RPI to be able to travel and try to get wins on the road."
Wake Forest opens the 10-game Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on September 27 as the Deacs travel to 2008 national champion North Carolina. The conference road schedule this year includes games at Clemson (October 4), NC State (October 15), Maryland (October 29) and Boston College (November 1).
All five home conference games in 2009 will feature teams that advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Duke opens the home ACC season on October 1. Other ACC foes scheduled to invade Spry Stadium this fall include Florida State (October 8), Miami (October 18), Virginia Tech (October 22) and Virginia (October 25).
"It seems like everybody in the ACC is an NCAA Tournament caliber team," da Luz said. "We had eight teams in the tournament last year. I anticipate this ACC regular season to be as tough as it has been in a long time. From top to bottom, the league is very competitive."
The 2009 ACC Tournament will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The tournament gets under way with the quarterfinal round on November 4. The semifinals are scheduled for November 6, with the championship game slated for November 8.
The first four rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be held at campus sites. The tournament begins on November 13 and 15 with the first two rounds. Third round games will take place between November 20-22, with the quarterfinals slated for November 27-29. The 2009 College Cup will be held December 4 and 6 in College Station, Texas.
