Wake Forest completed two practices on Monday at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex on the Wake Forest campus.
The Deacons practiced in full pads in the morning and returned for an evening session in jerseys, shorts and helmets.
Head coach Jim Grobe was pleased with the squad's performance in the second set of two-a-days this season.
"It's a fun group for me to watch right now," said Grobe. "Some of it is painful because we're not doing things right all the time. But we've sure got a good chemistry, good energy. I've got a good feeling about this football team. I don't know if we can beat anybody but I've got a good feeling about this football team."
Grobe has noticed that despite the numerous bumps and bruises that occur during preseason practice, this squad has found a way to work through those issues.
"One thing that's happened is that we've got some guys on the field right now who are playing with bumps and bruises," said Grobe. "We've got a very competitive situation, it's not like you're looking at the depth chart and you're seeing Aaron Curry or Alphonso Smith in front of you. These guys are saying `Hey, if I go to work, I've got a chance to play.' That's one of the reasons why we've got so much enthusiasm right now. There are so many kids with a chance to play. And because of that, we've got some kids who are displaying a pretty good amount of determination and toughness. The comfort zone for a football coach is dependability. We tell them all the time that the most important ability is dependability. Some of these guys are showing us that they want to be there and that means a lot to us. That's typically the guys that want to win football games. It's been a good camp so far in that we're starting to see that football is really important to these guys."
The Deacons will practice again on Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 at the on-campus practice facility. Wake will have two practices on Wednesday and is scheduled to scrimmage Thursday morning at BB&T Field.
All practice times are subject to change.
