WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest football team worked out for just over two hours Tuesday on a warm afternoon at the Doc Martin Football Complex on campus.
The Deacons donned full pads for the workout which was mostly spent on redzone situations. Senior quarterback Riley Skinner made a number of nice plays and redshirt-freshman Chris Givens helped his quarterbacks with a couple of nice catches.
One notable change in practice today came with the receiving corps as sophomore Skylar Jones was working out with the wideouts. He was shifted receiver from his back-up quarterback roll because of the injury to redshirt-freshman Terrence Davis. Davis suffered a torn ACL at Monday night's practice and will likely miss the rest of the season. The Lilburn, Ga., native had a good start to camp and was the leading receiver in the Deacons' scrimmage last Saturday.
The other story of Tuesday's practice was the heat but with a sweatshirt on his back, head coach Jim Grobe welcomed the warm temperatures.
"It was really hot this afternoon which I think was good for us because we're going to have to play in some really hot weather but I thought we got in some good work today," said Grobe. "It was a pretty physical practice too. I thought at times the offense, especially during the inside drills, did some nice things, and I thought when we got into some team stuff the defense stepped up a little bit.
The Deacs have been practicing for just over a week and with two and a half weeks until the Baylor Bears roll into town, Grobe is pleased with the team's progress to this point.
"It's been an interesting camp so far because I don't think we've really had a bad practice yet," Grobe continued. "Usually by this time there is something that I'm not real happy with but that doesn't mean we're ready to play or anything but we just have a good group of guys that seem to enjoy practice. We have some nice competition going on right now. Both the offense and defense are going at each other pretty good but we have a lot of improvement to make. We're still tinkering with some stuff both offensively and defensively but by the end of this week we should have everything in and we should be able to pick and choose what to work on next week."
Wake will continue camp with two workouts on Wednesday. The first practice will be in full pads from 9:45 am to 11:30 am and the second will be with just helmets from 7:45 pm to 9:15 pm. On Thursday, the team will hold its second controlled scrimmage of the season at BB&T Field beginning at 2 pm.
