WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest held its second two-session day of the week, as the Demon Deacons were put through a morning and an evening workout on Wednesday at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex.
Wake battled the heat and humidity in full pads in the morning before practicing under the lights in the helmets-only nightcap. Despite the sweltering conditions, the Deacons continued to work hard as preseason camp approaches the two-week mark.
"We had a good day today. It was hot," said head coach Jim Grobe. "We had some tired guys out here, but they worked through it. I thought the defense stepped up a little bit today in our two team periods. We probably missed a few too many throws, but I thought we just had a good work day today.
"One of the things we're doing still is we're continuing to tinker with the offense and defense and add a wrinkle here and there. So our guys are not only a little bit tired right now, but they have a lot to think about. All-in-all, not the best practice we've ever had but a good work day."
Wake Forest will hold its second scrimmage of the preseason on Thursday afternoon at BB&T Field. Grobe and the coaches will continue to evaluate the team and how the players perform in game-like situations.
"A little bit like the last scrimmage, I think the key for us is to try to work on developing depth," said Grobe. "We have a feeling who some of the top guys are, but we're not real sure who belongs in that second unit. And in some cases we still have firsts and seconds fighting for the top job.
"We really haven't gotten into game plan stuff right now; we're not doing much on our first few opponents. We're really just kind of concentrating on blocking and tackling right now--just let the kids compete and have some fun. And for us as coaches, try to evaluate the talent we have, especially the younger players."
The scrimmage is set to begin at 2 p.m. at BB&T Field. The Deacons will hit the practice fields twice on Friday with morning and afternoon sessions scheduled.
