WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team opens the 2009 regular season on Friday, when it plays host to High Point. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
The Demon Deacons are coming off an impressive showing in the team's only exhibition game of the fall, a 4-0 victory against Campbell. Wake Forest scored three first period goals en route to the easy win. Kaley Fountain, Jordan Feger and Jill Hutchinson each scored for the Demon Deacons.
The Wake Forest defense also had a nice start to the year, holding Campbell without a shot for the entire game. Laura Morse and Amanda Barasha combined on the shutout, as Morse played the first 75 minutes of the game, while Barasha handled the final 15 minutes.
High Point returns 19 letterwinners from the 2008 team that finished the year with an 8-5-8 overall record. The Panthers are projected to finish second in the Big South Conference this season after finishing fifth in the league last year with a 3-2-4 conference mark.
Junior midfielder Sara Rager led the Panthers in scoring in 2008 with four goals, eight assists and 16 points. Forwards Karra Damascus (7 g, 1 a) and Laura Eldridge (6 g, 3 a) each had 15 points in 2008. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Abbott played in 12 games, including 11 starts, in 2008 and had a 0.92 goals against average.
Wake Forest has done well in season openers, recording an 8-4-3 mark in season lid-lifters. Last year, the Deacs opened the season with a 2-1 overtime victory against Utah. Wake Forest is 13-2 all-time in home openers.
The Demon Deacons and Panthers will be meeting for the first time in series history on Friday night. Wake Forest has had success against members of the Big South Conference, posting a 6-1-0 record against members of the conference.
