WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest welcomes the Stanford Cardinal to Winston-Salem for the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Demon Deacons and Cardinal are set to square off at noon on Saturday at BB&T Field. The game will be broadcast regionally by Raycom and is also available over the Wake Forest ISP Radio Network.
The Deacons are looking to bounce back from their season-opening loss to Baylor last Saturday at BB&T Field. Wake Forest, who beat Baylor in its 2008 season opener in Waco, fell 24-21 to a talented Bears squad.
Mike Rinfrette rushed for the Deacons' first touchdown of the season, and Devon Brown and Andrew Parker each caught TD passes in the loss. Brown also led Wake Forest in rushing, gaining 46 yards on eight carries.
Stanford is looking to keep things rolling following its 39-13 thrashing of Washington State last Saturday in Pullman, Wash. Stanford has now won two straight season openers under third-year head coach Jim Harbaugh after defeating Oregon State to begin the 2008 campaign.
Wake Forest and Stanford will be meeting on the gridiron for the first-ever time on Saturday. The teams will also meet during the 2010 season in Palo Alto, California.
Quickie Notes
- Wake Forest has never faced a Pac-10 team during the regular season prior to this weekend's showdown with Stanford. The Deacons have earned three bowl wins over the conference, defeating Arizona State in the 1999 Jeep Aloha Bowl and Oregon in the 1992 Independence Bowl and 2002 Seattle Bowl.
- If Wake Forest finishes the 2009 season with a record above .500, it would mark the first time since 1944-48 that the Deacons have had a winning record in four or more consecutive seasons.
Next Up...
Wake Forest hosts in-state rival Elon next Saturday at 6:30 p.m. It will mark the Deacons' first game against an FCS school since hosting Liberty in 2006. Wake will hit the road on Sept. 26 for its ACC opener and first road game of 2009 at Boston College.
