Once longtime annual rivals, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech are set to meet for just the third time since the Hokies joined the ACC in 2004. The Deacons and Hokies will square off on Saturday afternoon in Lane Stadium. The game is set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU. The game is also available on the Wake Forest ISP Sports Radio Network.
Wake Forest and Virginia Tech have met 34 times since 1916 but just twice in conference play, with the Hokies taking both matchups. The Deacons and Hokies played in all but three seasons from 1954-84.
When the series resumed in 2004 with Virginia Tech a new member of the ACC, the Hokies picked up a 17-10 win in Winston-Salem. Virginia Tech also earned a 27-6 win at BB&T Field in 2006, during the Deacons' run to the ACC title that season. This will be Wake Forest's first trip to Blacksburg since Sept. 10, 1983.
The Deacons (2-4, 1-2) enter this season's matchup coming off a heartbreaking 28-27 loss to Navy last weekend in Winston-Salem. The Midshipmen scored the game-winning touchdown with 26 seconds remaining, sending the Deacons to their second straight last-second loss.
Quarterback Tanner Price set a number of freshman records in the game after completing 37 of 53 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Price also rushed for a score to account for all three of Wake Forest's touchdowns on the day.
Virginia Tech (4-2, 2-0) heads into the game fresh off a 45-21 non-conference win over Central Michigan. The Hokies have won four straight, including twice in conference play, since opening the season with consecutive losses.
Quickie Notes
- Despite not having played at the venue since 1983, Wake Forest holds a two-game winning streak at Lane Stadium. The Deacons posted back-to-back wins there in 1982-83.
- For his career, junior wide receiver Devon Brown is four catches shy of 100 and 22 receiving yards shy of 1,000.
Next Up...
Wake Forest will be off next weekend before hitting the road again to take on Maryland on Oct. 30 in College Park. The Deacons have won three out of the last four meetings with the Terps but fell in their last trip to Byrd Stadium in 2008. Wake returns home on Nov. 6 to host Boston College.
