Weekly Recap:
The Wake Forest men's soccer team finished last week with an 0-1-1 record, falling at William & Mary 2-0 on Tuesday night and tying NC State 1-1 at home on Saturday night.
The Demon Deacons are now 5-6-2 on the year and 3-1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Freshman Luca Gimenez scored the only goal of the week for the Deacs, tallying his third goal of the season in the first half against NC State. Fellow rookie Tolani Ibikunle assisted on Gimenez's goal for his second helper of the year.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald had a busy week in net, making 13 saves and allowing three goals. With his 13 stops, Fitzgerald now has 212 saves, which ranks fifth in school history. For the season, Fitzgerald has a 5-6-2 record with a 1.04 goals against average.
Wake Forest held its third annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match on Saturday against NC State. The Demon Deacons honored the memory of Genna Wiley, the late wife of former men's soccer trainer, Steve Wiley. The Demon Deacons wore pink Nike jerseys, which were auctioned off in a silent auction held during the game. The auction raised $2,680 for the North Carolina Triad affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Deacs opened the week at William & Mary, falling 2-0 to the Tribe. After a scoreless first half, William & Mary scored two goals in the first six minutes of the second half for the win. Wake Forest managed 11 shots in the game, but were unable to score, getting shut out for the sixth time this season.
Wake Forest returned home on Saturday, hosting NC State in a key conference match. The Deacs grabbed the lead in the 25th minute as Gimenez scored his third goal of the season, curling a shot into the right side of the net from 16 yards out. NC State equalized in the second half as David Brown scored his second goal of the year in the 65th minute. Neither side was able to find a winning goal for the rest of regulation or in the two overtime periods.
Wake Forest returns to action on Saturday, traveling to College Park, Md., to face the fourth-ranked Maryland Terrapins. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
