WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's seniors will celebrate their final home game as the Demon Deacons take on Clemson on Senior Day at BB&T Field on Saturday at 2 p.m."It's going to be tough" said senior linebacker Hunter Haynes. "I'm just not thinking about it right now but I'm sure it will hit me when I walk on that field for the last time. I'm sure it will be emotional, but we've got a good small group of seniors. It's going to be fun to play with those guys one last time and give it all I have and kind of lay it all out there."
The game will be a celebration of what the seniors have done in their five-year careers, which started in 2006 with an ACC Championship and included three-straight bowl appearances.
"There is a feeling of loss when they leave, but we're proud of them and they're going to leave with a degree," said head coach Jim Grobe. "They're going to go on and do some really good things for society and our country. They're really great people."
"It's crazy," said senior center Russell Nenon. "It seems like just yesterday that I was at the Orange Bowl. It's been a blast."
This group of seniors has been through some of the best seasons in Wake Forest football history, and despite a 2-8 mark this year, they battled every step of the way.
"It's disappointing that my senior year's gone this way, but I really, really enjoyed being on this team" said Nenon. "We worked very hard, but sometimes things just didn't go our way. We're going to work hard the last two weeks and hopefully give us a win heading into the spring."
The seniors get the task of leading the Deacs against a good 5-5 Clemson team.
"How talented they are really goes without saying," said Grobe. "They have first round draft picks. They have a physically imposing defense. They have a big running back, and they have a quarterback that can do some amazing things. This is another Clemson team that is really, really talented."
Clemson running backs Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper have over 1,100 yards combined and have a total of 15 rushing touchdowns between them.
"You see a huge offensive line and tons of talent everywhere, great quarterback, great running back" said Haynes. "It's going to be tough to stop but every week there's great athletes in this conference."
Tigers quarterback Kyle Parker is having a solid season, passing for 1,768 yards and throwing nine touchdown passes.
The Wake Forest offense will also have a tough challenge, as the Tigers hold their opponents to the ninth fewest points in the country.
"They're playing incredible on defense this year so we're going to have our hands full" said Nenon.
Despite the struggles this season, Wake Forest feels it is improving each and every week.
"These young guys are going to keep working and they'll be successful" said Haynes. "It's just that we just haven't seen it this season."
"I'm confidence in the offensive line, I'm confident in the defense" said Nenon. "I think we're going to give them a challenge and hopefully, it'd be great to come out with a win, but we're going to have our hands full. I wouldn't ask for any better senior day."
Wake Forest will also introduce this year's Hall of Fame induction class, which includes George Coghill, Bob Grant, Gerald Huth, Jim Leighton and Nolan Swanson. The five new inductees will be honored at halftime.
The Deacons will recognize the seniors in a pre-game ceremony 20 minutes before kickoff.
