DAVIDSON, N.C. - Ben Newnam and Andy Lubahn each scored a goal, while Akira Fitzgerald recorded his fourth shutout of the season as Wake Forest defeated Davidson, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium.

Wake Forest won its third consecutive match to improve to 8-7-2 on the season, while Davidson fell to 6-6-6 on the year.

The Deacs scored a goal in each half to claim the win. Newnam staked Wake Forest to a 1-0 lead with his first collegiate goal in the 23rd minute, while Lubahn doubled the lead with his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 49th minute.

With his first collegiate goal in the contest, Newnam now has four points on the season and has scored at least one point in three of the last four games. Lubahn, the reigning ACC Co-Player of the Week, scored his fourth goal over the last two games to increase his point total on the year to a team-best 16.

Luke Norman and Danny Wenzel each added an assist in the win, with both assists coming on Lubahn's goal. The assist for Norman was his first of the season, while Wenzel provided his second helper of the year.

Fitzgerald earned his fourth clean sheet of the season to improve to 8-7-2 on the year. Fitzgerald made three saves in the win to bring his season total to an ACC-best 74 saves. Fitzgerald now has 230 saves in his career, which ranks in a tie for fourth in school history with Sean Connor (1996-99).

Chip Sanders took the loss in goal for Davidson, giving up two goals and making four saves.

Alex Caskey led the Wildcats with four shots, including two shots on goal, while Alex Givens attempted two shots.

Both teams attempted nine shots in the match, with Wake Forest holding a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Each team also had three corner kick opportunities over the 90 minutes.

Wake Forest dominated the early stages of the match and the Deacs were able to take advantage, grabbing the lead in the 23rd minute on Newnam's first goal of his career. A cross was played into the box that eventually found its way to Newnam, who fired a shot from 15 yards out into the back of the net to put Wake Forest in front 1-0.

Davidson came back quickly and attempted its first shot of the match just eight seconds later as Caskey had an attempt on frame that was saved by Fitzgerald.

The Wildcats had another quality scoring chance in the 41st minute but Mark Millard was foiled by the woodwork as his shot hit the crossbar to keep the Demon Deacons in front.

Wake Forest had an opportunity to double its lead in the final minute of the first half, but the shot from Jared Watts was saved by Sanders and the Deacons took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

The Deacs again came out strong at the start of the second half, doubling its lead in the 49th minute. Wenzel headed a pass to Norman outside the left post. Norman then played another header to Lubahn, who scored from close range for his eighth goal of the season.

Wake Forest tried to take a three-goal lead in the 63rd minute but Emerson's shot was saved by Sanders.

Davidson had its only shot on goal of the second half in the 78th minute when Caskey's shot was saved by Fitzgerald for his third stop of the match.

Wake Forest closes the regular season on Friday at No. 21 Duke. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
