WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After enduring nearly a month away from home, Wake Forest returns to Winston-Salem to take on Atlantic Division rival Boston College at BB&T Field on Saturday."Honestly, I think home field is easier on a young football team" said head coach Jim Grobe. "Young guys tend to hyperventilate when their on the road.
"When their at home, the bad calls and big plays aren't magnified as much because you have a supportive crowd" said Grobe. "Hopefully, we'll play better this Saturday playing back at home."
The Deacons (2-6, 1-4 ACC) have performed much better at home than on the road this season, winning their first two games against Presbyterian and Duke. Wake Forest also has two home losses, but those resulted from last drive touchdowns by Georgia Tech and Navy.
"It feels good to be playing at home" said freshman defensive end Zach Thompson. "I feel like we've been playing better at home this year, and I think we'll come out with a little fire."
Since those first two home victories, however, Wake Forest has yet to find the win column. This extended streak has rightfully dampened the attitude in the Wake Forest locker room.
"I don't want our guys to be happy" said Grobe. "I don't want our coaches or our players to be happy about what is going on."
"You don't want negativity, but you don't want kids to be happy about it," said Grobe. "Work ethic is our big key right now. We're just watching kids, and the guys who are working during the week are the guys who will be playing on Saturday."
Redshirt freshman Michael Campanaro pointed to a lack of execution as the reason for Wake Forest's struggles this season.
"I think going into each week we have a good game plan, we look good in practice, but every time we get out there and look back at the film, it's always a few minor details that as players we're just not getting done" said freshman wide receiver Campanaro.
"And it really is execution I think" said Campanaro. "You can go out there and you can run a fullback dive and if you execute the play right you can run it all game. I fell like right now we're just not executing on offense, defense and special teams."
The Deacons know that they will have to be better if they want to get a win against the Eagles.
"We have got to really step up against this Boston College running game" said Grobe. "They're a big, physical, tough, hard-nosed football team, just like we always expect out of Boston College."
Boston College running back Montel Harris is leading the ACC in rushing with 836 yards, and will face a Wake Forest defense that has struggled to keep its opponents from scoring.
"We're young and we're talented, we just need to be mentally sharp and just do our assignments to help each other out" said Thompson.
Wake Forest will look to turn misfortune into opportunity as the season heads to its final quarter.
"We're definitely down because we're 2-6, but we have four more games left and the season's not over" said Campanaro. "I think Saturday you're going to see us out there fighting; our backs are against the wall."
