Weekly Recap:
The Wake Forest men's soccer team went 1-1 on the past week, defeating Davidson 2-0 on Tuesday night and falling at Duke 2-1 on Friday evening.
The Demon Deacons close the regular season with an 8-8-2 overall record and a 4-3-1 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Luca Gimenez, Andy Lubahn and Ben Newnam each had a goal on the week to lead the Wake Forest offense. Gimenez scored his fifth goal of the season in Wake's loss against Duke on Friday. For the season, Gimenez now has 12 points on the season, scoring two assists to go along with his five goals. Lubahn found the back of the net for the team-leading eighth time against Davidson on Tuesday. Lubahn also leads Wake with 16 points. Newnam scored his first collegiate goal at Davidson, scoring the game winner early in the second half. Newnam now has a goal and two assists on the year.
Luke Norman and Danny Wenzel also found the scoresheet on the week, with each playing having an assist. Both assists came on Lubahn's goal against Davidson. Norman's assist was his first of the season, while Wenzel recorded his second assist of the year.
Akira Fitzgerald finished the week with 10 saves and two goals allowed. The redshirt senior from Baltimore, Md., recorded his fourth shutout of the season in the win against Davidson. For the season, Fitzgerald has an 8-8-2 record with a 1.24 goals against average. He also has an ACC leading 81 saves. Fitzgerald also ranks fourth in school history now with 237 career saves.
The Deacs scored a goal in each half to claim the win at Davidson on Tuesday. Newnam staked Wake Forest to a 1-0 lead with his first collegiate goal in the 23rd minute, while Lubahn doubled the lead with his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 49th minute. Fitzgerald made three saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year.
Against Duke, Wake Forest grabbed the lead early in the second half on a penalty kick goal by Gimenez. The Demon Deacons were forced to play a man down in the 51st minute after a red card was issued to Ben Newnam and Duke took advantage, scoring the next two goals to claim the win. Chris Tweed-Kent scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute, while Cole Grossman had the game winner on a penalty kick in the 54th minute.
Wake Forest has earned the three seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament and will open postseason play on Wednesday, November 10, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The opponent and time of the game will be announced on Sunday.
