POSTGAME QUOTES
Boston College 23, Wake Forest 13
November 6, 2010
BB&T Field - Winston-Salem, NC
Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe
On the struggles of the offense today...
"We played better today, defensively. I don't think there's any question. I was really pleased with the way we competed today. You just can't throw four interceptions, you can't fumble a punt. After we fumbled the punt to start the third quarter, I thought our defense hung in there as hard as they could. We started getting ourselves in trouble field position wise. I thought the defense played better today, but they didn't get a lot of help from the offensive side of the ball. I thought turnovers were big today and that's something that we preached all week. Take care of the football and try to play smart. At times, we didn't do that today. I'm very disappointed in the number of injuries we had today. We had a lot of guys knocked out today. We lost (Joe) Looney early with an ankle sprain. We lost (Michael) Hoag with a concussion and we lost Josh Harris with a concussion. We lost Billy Mitchell when he was knocked out on the sideline. It seemed like a lot of those things were happening to us today. We really needed to develop some consistency and I think that hurt our consistency a little bit."
On the status of Billy Mitchell...
"He looks like he took a direct hit. He has an eye swollen shot. I don't know how much damage has been done to him, but the kids need to take a look at him and take a lesson in toughness. He's a warrior. He came back out. I tried to get him to stay in for the second half, but he wouldn't do it. He's banged up pretty good. Half of his face looks like the old coach Mitchell and the other doesn't. He got hit pretty good."
On the injury to Tristan Dorty...
"He's been struggling all week. He practiced during the week. He went in there and squeezed the cut back and hit Harris at the line of scrimmage and collapsed. That's a disappointing thing to have happen when you prepare somebody all week and have them go out on the first play. Especially, for a guy like him, because he's one of the key guys on the defensive side."
On the play of Kevin Smith...
"We have Kevin (Smith) down inside at defensive end. We've gotten where Tristan (Dorty) is playing outside linebacker now. I thought Kevin had an opportunity to make a few more plays. He was in their backfield a little bit today. He did get his name called quite a bit."
On Boston College's Montel Harris...
"I thought he was great, on the last drive especially. He's leading the league in rushing. The nice thing about Montel Harris is that's he a very talented kid, but he's very durable. He carries the ball a lot and he took some shots out there this afternoon. We ran into him a bunch. He just kept coming back. The good thing about him is that he's not only very talented, but really tough and durable."
Boston College head coach Frank Spaziani
On running back Montel Harris...
"He's a heck of a running back, he really is. Some guys come free and he'll make them miss and then he'll make a run. Sometimes he doesn't make the right cut, but most of the time he does a fantastic job and tonight he played really well."
On the game...
"We were able to get some turnovers and make some plays. Some guys were stepping up and did it again, so that was good. We want to make more plays and get some more turnovers, and that will make a big difference in play."
On BC's last offensive drive...
"That's like the good-old days, to finish a game like that. I'm not sure how much time there was when we got the ball, I think it was 9:20. It was a little out of character how the game went. We looked off a couple and made a couple plays. The kids have some determination and hopefully we can build on that because that's the way we have to play."
On mistakes...
"We have to get it corrected. There is no excuse for what's going on there. We have to get it corrected, because, once again, we're not going to be able to win games coming up with miscues like that. We have to address it. I would like to say we analyze everybody the same, try to take away what they do best and put the players in the best possible position."
On freshman quarterback Chase Rettig...
"He's a very young football player still. He's played only one year of high school football, I think, so he's on his third year. He certainly has a lot of potential, and we've been trying to challenge him. This was a better game for him, for a lot of reasons, and I think he responded."
Wake Forest Players
Senior linebacker Joey Ehrmann
On today's game...
"I feel like we came out today and played hard. We played hard for four quarters but those five turnovers were just too much to overcome. We just couldn't get it today."
On enduring a losing streak...
"It's really difficult. Nobody wants it to be like this. Something just isn't working right now and everybody is really upset about it."
On whether it's possible to see brighter days ahead...
"Absolutely. I'm positive that there are much better days ahead. I think we're really young, but each game all these young guys are getting better and better. I think there is a really bright future for this program in a couple of years."
Junior offensive tackle Dennis Godfrey
On the frustration of losing...
"It's really frustrating right now. We've been working our tail ends off and are working hard in practice, and it just seems like it's not clicking. But at the same time, we also have the confidence that as long as we keep working hard, things will turn around. Like Coach Grobe said in the locker room, we got better today, we competed and we played hard. We just have to find ways to eliminate turnovers and make big plays. Once we get that, we'll be a winning football team again."
On today's offensive struggles...
"One thing that's really frustrating to me is that sometimes we're on our blocks, but sometimes we don't maintain our blocks long enough for our running backs. I put that on myself and the rest of the offensive line because that's something we have to take pride in. When we're there, we have to keep pushing and keep fighting. Every game, we don't put the loss on our quarterbacks or on our defense because we know that if we (the offensive line) have a bad day, we're not going to win."
