WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's basketball team will host intra-state rival Queens University Wednesday evening in an exhibition contest. The game, which is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum, will serve as the final tune-up for the Demon Deacons as they prepare for the 2010-11 regular season.
Wake will kick off the regular season this Sunday, Nov. 14, as it hosts NC Central at 2:00 pm at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The Deacons return four starters and almost 90 percent of its scoring from a team that finished 18-14 last season and made a second-straight WNIT appearance last season. Wake was also 7-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference which was the second-best mark in school history.
Senior forward Brittany Waters is the Deacs' leading returning scorer, averaging over 13 points per game last year. She is just 122 points shy of 1,000 for her career. Junior forward Secily Ray and sophomore center Sandra Garcia will be a strong combination down low. Ray topped the team each of the last two seasons in rebounding and averaged more than 11 points a game in 2009-10. Garcia recorded a total of seven double-doubles a year ago, which was second-best among rookies in the conference.
All three players earned All-ACC accolades in 2009-10. Ray took home third team honors while Waters garnered honorable mention honors and Garcia was named to the All-Freshmen Team.
Queens is coming off one of its best seasons in quite a while. The Royals finished 18-12 overall and 15-7 in the Conference Carolinas. They also advanced to the conference finals for the first time in school history.
The game on Wednesday will mark the first meeting between the two schools.
