WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman forward Katie Stengel has been named one of the 15 semifinalists for the 2010 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, the top individual award in college soccer.
Stengel is the first-ever Wake Forest player to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious award, and is one of only two freshmen, along with North Carolina's Crystal Dunn, to make the list of the final 15 candidates.
A native of Melbourne, Fla. Stengel is trying to add to the already impressive collection of awards and honors that she has garnered in her rookie season. She was named TopDrawerSoccer's National Rookie of the Year as well as the ACC Freshman of the Year. She was the first freshman in Wake Forest history to receive First Team All-ACC honors, and also made the ACC All-Tournament and All-Freshman teams.
Stengel set new Wake Forest single-season scoring records with 16 goals and 37 points, the highest totals of any freshman nationwide, with both numbers ranking in the top 10 among all Division I players. She currently leads the ACC in both categories, and should she remain in that position through this weekend's College Cup, she will become the first freshman to lead the conference in goals and points since 1999. No Wake Forest player has ever finished with the ACC lead in either category.
Considered the highest award in college soccer, the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner is voted upon by Division I coaches who are members of the NSCAA. Three finalists for the award will be announced on Dec. 10, with the winner to be announced on Jan. 7 at a ceremony at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
