WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest and Holy Cross met three times during the 1950s, including an NCAA Tournament matchup, but the teams have not played since 1959. The Demon Deacons and Crusaders are set to resume the rivalry with an early afternoon matchup on Saturday at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be available on the Wake Forest Sports Network from IMG College.
The Demon Deacons (4-3) are coming off a thrilling 76-73 win over Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday in Winston-Salem. Wake rallied from being 18 down in the first half. J.T. Terrell scored 32 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer from 25 feet with just two seconds remaining.
The win was the second straight for the Deacons, giving them consecutive victories for the first time in 2010-11. Wake Forest will look to make it three straight as it heads into a week-long break for final exams. The Deacons will not play again until a week from Sunday.
Holy Cross (0-5) comes to town following an 83-76 loss at in-state rival Massachusetts on Saturday in Amherst. The Crusaders are playing their fifth straight road game, but Saturday's matchup is their first time out of the New England region this season.
Wake Forest holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with Holy Cross. The series began during the 1952-53 season when the teams met twice, including a regional semifinal matchup in the NCAA Tournament. The Deacons and Crusaders last met in 1959-60 at the Dixie Classic in Raleigh. Wake has never lost to a Patriot League team since the conference formed in 1986.
Mescheriakov Eligible Next Weekend
Redshirt junior transfer Nikita Mescheriakov will be eligible to suit up for the Deacons next Sunday at UNC Wilmington, following next week's fall semester exams. Mescheriakov transferred from Georgetown, where he played in 30 career games with eight starts.
