PINEHURST, NC - Wake Forest men's golf coach Jerry Haas and Wake Forest alum Tim Straub won the Carolinas PGA Pro/Pro event last week in Pinehurst, NC. The team carded rounds of 64-65-66 to win by two shots at 20-under par.
Haas and Straub, who is the head men's golf coach at Davidson, opened the event with a bogey-free 64 at the Pinewild Country Club. They then made five birdies and an eagle in a second round 65 at Pine Needles Golf Club that put them one-shot behind Travis Lethco and Luke Lovell.
The duo stormed out of the gate in the final round at Pinehurst No. 8 with three birdies in the first six holes. They made four more birdies on the back nine and despite a birdie at the final hole, the team finished two shots ahead of Mike Cato and Paul Dickens at 20-under par.
This was Haas' fourth tournament this year in Carolinas PGA Section. He finished tied for 17th at the Carolinas Open in May and then tied for fifth at the North Carolina Open in June and tied for fourth at the Carolinas PGA Professional Championship in September. His finish at the Professionals Championship earned him a spot in the 44th PGA Professionals National Championship next June where the top-20 qualify for the 2011 PGA Championship.
Haas finished eighth in the Carolinas PGA Player of the Year race and was tied for fifth in the Mountain Chapter PGA Player of the Year race. He won the MCPGA Match Play Title this past summer.
